You Don't Know What You've Got Til It's...stolen

I feel like I’ve been on an emotional rollercoaster ride this week. Thank goodness it’s Friday.

It all started last Saturday when someone broke into our so–called secure car park and stole our car. We realised on Sunday morning and made our way to the police with heavy hearts.

The car in question was a 1991 Mazda 121 which had, quite frankly, seen better days. But, while the other cars in the car park are younger, shinier and prettier, we loved our bubble car just the same. It had served us well.

And someone took it.

Sunday and Monday were spent mourning our loss – of road trips that would never be, places that wouldn’t be seen together and my favourite dvd that had been left on the backseat.

But alas, late Tuesday night came the call we had hoped for. They had found our car! Despite the late hour, my partner went to see the car and I fell asleep dreaming of our reunion.

Wednesday morning brought bad news. The damage was too severe – missing parts, broken windows, a boot beyond repair…Nothing could be done.

Well, on our budget anyway.

Wednesday afternoon and everything changed! The early diagnosis had been wrong! All was not lost.

On Thursday, a good mechanic and $500 later, our beloved Mazda 121 was home where he belonged.

Best of all, my favourite dvd was back too!

So what have I learned from this week?

Well, secure doesn’t always mean secure. We have been lazy with using our club lock on the steering wheel because we thought our car was safe in our private car park. So when the thieves did find our car, the fact that it was old (without a sophisticated alarm system like newer cars) and did not have any sort of security lock made it an easy target.

I would also suggest you do not use your car like a storage space. Thankfully the dvd was spared, so too were a pair of Oakley sunglasses (only because they were out on sight on the floor). But the contents of our boot were stolen including a body board and a poker set. Not only does keeping extra stuff in your car make it more attractive to potential thieves, the extra weight also makes your car less fuel efficient.

And finally, appreciate your car - no matter how old or ugly it may be, you'll miss it if it's stolen!
